The Assiginack Museum Assiginack Museum
is nestled in the village of Manitowaning, Ontario, Canada. We have a beautiful
green area for you to stroll through as you enjoy a pioneer home, blacksmith
shop, school house and a barn. Our main building has a wonderful collection of
glassware, porcelain and pottery. This museum contains artifacts that tell the
story of early settlers to this area of Manitoulin Island and has a connection
to people living here. The museum has a great interest in genealogy and our
curator is very knowledgeable in local families and local history. The museum
is open from June to September each spring and summer. Come explore! Built in
1878, this stone jail evolved into a government building, and later the area's
museum. Pottery, glassware and porcelain are just some of the items from early
Island settlers. The site also houses several historic buildings, including a
pioneer school and home. Open from June until October. Address: 125 Arthur St,
Manitowaning, Manitoulin Island, ON
Cup and Saucer Hiking Trail The Cup and
Saucer Hiking Trail has a unique outline against the Manitoulin skyline. Signs
mark the trail through the woods up the dramatic edge of the escarpment to a
grassy resting-place. Lover trail is 2.7 km and the upper trial is 5.4 km in
length. The adventure trail, a 2-km option on the top of the escarpment, takes
the avid hiker up and down sturdy ladders, up a natural rock chimney and along
narrow ledges for a panoramic view of the North Channel of Lake Huron. For more
information call 1-800-465-6655.
Mississagi LighthouseHistorical Museum
Walk the halls of the historic lighthouse. Come and see what life was like as a
Lighthouse Keeper in the 19th and 20th centuries. 1873 The Missisagi Lighthouse
was built in 1873 to aid travelers through the dangerous Mississagi Straits.
Due to an off shore magnetic reef the navigational systems in ships would be
thrown off causing many shipwrecks. 1881 In 1881 the Fog Horn Plant was built
to further aid travelers through the dense fog that often covers the Straits in
the early morning. Trails Located near the Meldrum Bay Lighthouse are several
short trails that follow the craggy shoreline over flat limestone ledges,
around enormous boulders and through rock fissures. Trails offer fine views of
Lake Huron. For more information call 1-800-465-6655.
Old Schoolhouse Fine Dining A vacation
wouldn't be complete without a great meal and the best we had was at the Old
Schoolhouse. Located in Providence Bay, this fine dining restaurant is set in
an old one-room school house dating back to 1898. The ambiance is relaxing and
quiet with soft lighting and music making for the perfect evening out.
